California Solar Penetration Reaches 7.2% in 2016

California solar penetration reached 7.2% in 2016 (498,801 residential installations in 6.9 million single family homes).  The zip code with the greatest penetration was 93314 in Bakersfield, which has reached 33.2% solar penetration.  Six zip codes in San Diego County (92127, 92131, 92065, 92024, 92064, and 92082) all had solar penetration greater than 20%.

The map presents solar penetration by zip code (hover over the area for detailed statistics) and the chart below lists the top 20 zip codes in California with the highest solar penetration.

This analysis was based on data from the California Solar Initiative using the Net Energy Metering Interconnection dataset and the App Approved date.  This accounts for an estimated 85% of all installations in California.
